High Court has directed the Director General of Police

The High Court has directed the Director-General of Police to inform by August 12 when the police will launch the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) and how it will work in respect to providing tribunals with data on accident cases.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and Justice Shameem Akther was dealing with a suo motu taken-up PIL on the directions of the Supreme Court on the implementation of sub-section 6 of Section 158 of the Motor Vehicle Act. The provision mandates the police to submit the accident information report to the tribunals concerned within 30 days. The bench asked the DGP about the station house officers’ delay in submitting the reports.

As directed by the court, the DGP submitted an affidavit explaining that the CID had set up a mechanism to forward the reports to the tribunal.

The DGP stated that all unit officers were instructed to forward monthly progress report to the CID at the state level.A provision in the CCTNS was being made for the purpose of uploading reports in all road accident cases to create real-time data for compliance with the Supreme Court guidelines.
