Hyderabad: A consignment of 900 kg of ganja which was being smuggled to Maharashtra from Bhadrachalam, was intercepted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Tuesday. Two persons have been taken into custody for questioning, while a search is on for the main accused.

Acting on a tip, the sleuths of DRI, Hyderabad zone, had camped on the Karimnagar-Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi Rahadari.

They stopped and searched a lorry in which two persons were present. The sleuths found saplings of coconut and guava in the lorry initially. But a deeper search led them to several packets of ganja concealed between the saplings.

Sources close to the DRI said that the consignment was destined for Maharashtra. The saplings were loaded into the lorry at a nursery, and the saplings of the strong-smelling guava were especially chosen to mask the smell of ganja.

“Several packets of ganja were concealed between the coconut and guava saplings. The exact source and destination are yet to be identified,” a DRI official said.

“Two persons including the lorry driver were taken into custody by the officials for questioning, to find the details of the sender and receiver of the consignment. On weighing, the total contraband was found to be over 900 kg,” said an official.
