Water released from Kandaleru for Chennai

Nellore: In a bid to quench the thirst of Chennaiites, the irrigation engineers here on Wednesday released 1000 cusecs of water to Saiganga canal, hitherto known as Chennai-Poondi canal.


The water will reach the Poondi Reservoir near Chennai “within six days”, said Chief Engineer of Telugu Ganga Project, Muralinadh Reddy.


Earlier, he released the water through two sluices after performing Puja at the head regulator of Kandaleru dam. The quantum of release would be increased to 1500 cusecs on Thursday, he said.


He said according to the interstate agreement on sharing of Krishna waters, AP has to release 3.5 tmc.ft to Chennai and this would be accomplished within next 3 months. The releases could be further increased if any request comes from Tamil Nadu, Reddy said.


Telugu Ganga SE Harinarayana Reddy, DE Vijayakumar Reddy and Kandaleru DE Ramana were present among other officials.
