Mob damages TSRTC bus, driver robbed in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: Passengers on a TSRTC bus bound for Hyderabad had some terrifying moments when a group of youth damaged the vehicle, attacked the driver and took away money. The incident occurred on the highway at Gollapudi junction near Bhavanipuram of Vijayawada at 2.30 am on Sunday, police said.


Police said that the incident was triggered apparently when the driver of the bus belonging to TSRTC, Narkatpalli depot, going to Hyderabad from Vijayawada, did not give way to one of the motorcyclists. They along with 25 of their friends chased the bus and forced it to halt. They broke the glasses of the bus and snatched Rs 25,000 from the driver after attacking him. Passengers were panic-stricken during the incident.


The police reached the spot and took three youths into custody. A search is on to nab the rest. Police registered a case for damaging government property. A case was also registered under Section 337 on the TSRTC driver.


Bus driver Ch. Janaiah said he had left the Pandit Nehru Bus Station of Vijayawada for Hyderabad with 32 passengers and reached the Gollapudi highway at around 2.30 am. He said that a group of people aged between 20 and 30 years on six bikes began riding on either side of the bus, carrying sticks and shouting. Three men on one bike came before the bus and forced it to stop, Mr Janaiah said.


After stopping the bus, they took stones from the roadside and broke its windowpanes. Later three persons entered the cabin and beat him up, Mr Janaiah said. They took away the cash bag containing nearly Rs 25,000.
